Student Device & Digital Wellness Policy
The BIE Personal Wireless Devices & Digital Wellness Policy establishes clear expectations for the use of personal wireless devices at Jemez Day School. The policy is designed to protect instructional time, improve student focus and engagement, support mental and emotional wellness, and strengthen meaningful connections among students, staff, families, and the community.
During the school day, personal wireless devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, tablets, laptops, and gaming devices—must remain powered off or on airplane mode and stored out of sight. Limited exceptions apply for safety, emergencies, and specific school-sponsored activities at staff discretion.
The policy also outlines expectations for emergency communication, responsible use of technology, protection of Tribal cultural information, staff digital role modeling, network security, and personal device liability. Violations may result in progressive consequences, including redirection, temporary confiscation, and parent/guardian involvement.
Ultimately, this policy promotes a “Disconnected to Reconnect” approach, encouraging students to be present, focused, culturally connected, and engaged in their learning while developing healthy and responsible digital habits.
